Ideas on restoring leather boots @ home? Salt stains are eating away at the toes and heels!?

I live in a very very snowy area and even though I haven%26#039;t worn my (very expensive) leather boots on too many slushy days, they have been affected by the salt on the streets. They are black boots which ended up being salt stained white all along the bottom edge after just a couple of wears. I used a little bit of vinegar to remove the stain and then I used some Vaseline to polish them, but it seems as though the salt actually CORRODED the leather in a few places. The leather was once soft and supple and now it%26#039;s grainy and looks almost like it%26#039;s been melted away and the black colour looks faded in those areas. Is there any way to restore these boots to make them look good as new again? They are a soft, purse-like leather.

saddle soap it%26#039;s used to clean leather and it will protect and soften it. You may have to use a paste wax to polish them afterwards but it is worth the extra effort , and it will protect them from the salt,if you really like the boots. I find saddle soap in shoe stores here.
Reply:Use Vaseline!
